Information 6-week Summer Study course in Portugal, sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley. Credits are transferable to most colleges/universities.

SUMMER COURSE: "PORTUGAL - LANGUAGE AND CULTURE"

The students will be hosted by the University of the Azores, in the Island of São Miguel, the University of Porto, in the city of Porto and by the University Lusofona in Lisbon. The course has been developed and will be staffed through a joint project of these Portuguese Universities and the University of California, Berkeley.

Duration: 6 weeks starting June 22, 2007 through August 6, 2007

This course aims to provide continuity to the study of Portuguese Language and Culture available at the University of California, Berkeley, enhance the students' awareness of Portuguese Culture through direct contact with Portuguese educational and cultural institutions. Additionally, the course will lead the students through a comprehensive trajectory that will establish the historical, cultural, economic and political links between Portugal, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, particularly South America.

The course will be divided into two sections: Language / Literature and Portuguese Culture. For the Language / Literature session students will be able to select between two levels of language - Beginning or Intermediate, while advanced students will be able to opt for the Portuguese Literature class. Acceptance in the Intermediate language class and/or Literature class Classes will require some knowledge of Portuguese. (Students must have completed at least one semester of language, or have passed an aptitude text in Portuguese). Beginning Portuguese is open to all students.
Students will earn 3 units of credit for the Language / Literature Section and 3 Units of credit for the Portuguese Culture Session.

There will be an orientation session on Thursday, May 18, 2007 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at 201 Moses Hall, University of California, Berkeley.

Evaluation: Morning Sessions: Four quizzes, on the last day of class each of the weeks. Final grade will be calculated as follows: quizzes - 70% (total - equally distributed); attendance and participation - 30%

Afternoon Sessions: Four Travel Journal Postings, three quizzes and one final research paper due on the last day of the course. Final grade will be calculated as follows: journal postings - 20%; quizzes - 20%; final paper - 30%; attendance and participation 30%

Students will arrive in Angra do Heroismo, Terceira, Açores on Friday, June 22, 2007, and will leave from Lisbon on Monday, August 6, 2007.
